"In this report, we introduce a recent development in the area of Web technologies which has the potential to revolutionise the area of ODL: The Semantic Web. While the Semantic Web has been, until now mostly considered from a research perspective, we focus here on the concrete benefit that can today be obtained from applying the set of principles and technologies that have emerged from the most pragmatic part of the Semantic Web field: Linked Data.

In this report we describe how this idea is being realised and how it can be adopted by organisations willing to contribute, interlink to and take advantage of the Web of Linked Data for ODL. We describe the tools, technologies and processes to publish and use Linked Data in a concrete way, focusing in particular on learning and teaching applications. Understanding both the costs and benefits of adopting Linked Data and Semantic Web technologies is, of course, a critical part of the process. Alongside the description and explanation of the technological notions related to this area we show how such notions can be applied to solve some of the specific problems faced in ODL and present a number of case studies in which such benefits have been concretely achieved"

"The mEducator Best Practice Network (BPN) aims to implement and critically evaluate existing standards and reference models in the field of e-learning in order to enable specialized state-of-the-art medical educational content to be discovered, retrieved, shared and re-used across European higher academic institution".

"With sharing and reusing, educational resources become increasingly important for enhancing learning and teaching  experiences, particularly in medical educational domain since these resources are expensive to re-produce. In respect to this, many  efforts have been applied to federate the resources to achieve the sharing and reusing goals, which led to a fragmented landscape of  competing metadata schemas, such as IEEE LOM or OAI-DC, and interface mechanisms, such as OAI-PMH or SQI. However, the  major issue of educational resource federating is the heterogeneity challenge of metadata and data. In this paper, we illustrate a  medical educational dataset (mEducator Linked Educational Resources dataset) that is published as part of the Linked Open Data  cloud following Linked Data principles. The dataset contains educational resource metadata federated from ten different (medical)  educational institutes together with enriched links to related information by using Linked Data techniques and datasets. We introduce a Semantic Web Service based data extracting mechanism that is exploited for services and data integration to address  heterogeneous metadata problems. The paper also discusses the dataset accessing APIs, statistics and existing applications of using  the mEducator dataset".

    Linked Data on the BBC

    Ventajas:

    • In terms of usability, it's about making a site around the things people care and think about.
    • In terms of User Experience, it's more that just linking. It's also about having meaningful predicates and granular, addressable resources, so that those resources can be transcluded or visualised in new ways. For example, we can graph how many times a brand plays an artist...
Make things ajax by consuming machine feeds of a resource.
    • And making sure that each thing has it’s own resource makes these objects more findable,
      and more sharable.
    • SEO
    •  Findability
    •  Clickability
    • Tweetability

Following the Linked Data principles, the BBC is publishing a URI for every TV and Radio programme it broadcasts, music artists and more recently animal species and habitats. These pages not only provide useful information in their own right but also allow us to re-contextualise the programme information helping users to discover new content and new patterns. In this seminar we will present the motivation behind these projects and how their design and implementation has allowed us to expose their contents on the Web of Data.

Smart Notebooks: Keeping on the same page, across the net

    • Peer-to-Peer
    • Estándares abiertos, software libre, ecosistema abierto

Building a Linked Data Graph for Education

"Just as a social and professional graph have emerged through Facebook and LinkedIn, so too is an education graph emerging describing connections between students, teachers and the learning resources they use. The Talis Aspire application allows university lecturers to create lists of learning resources for a particular course, which are then expressed according to the Linked Data paradigm. With the application now in use at one quarter of UK universities, the resulting data provides a rich insight into patterns of resource usage across the education sector. This talk will detail the mechanisms used to unify the various institutional graphs, exploiting the flexibility of the RDF data model and the Linked Data principles, before describing how this unified education graph is being used to provide value back to customers, in the form of analytics and recommendations.

    Key points:

    • Talis Aspire is based on Semantic Web technologies and Linked Data principles.
    • It is widely deployed across the UK Higher Education sector and used daily by large numbers of staff and students.
    • The aggregate view of the resulting data provides unique, cross-sector insights.
    • The techniques used to assemble this graph mirror those used to interlink the Web of Data as a whole.
