    DiscOU (The Open University)

    DiscOU is a resources discovery engine relying on a semantic index of Open University Open Content. It semantically analyse the content of an online resource, and match it by similarity to other existing Open University content to retrieve the most relevant pieces.

    DiscOU is developed at the Knowledge Media Institute of the Open University, based on linked data techonologies.

    The resource includes a video with a demo of DiscOU system, that suggest content from Open University open educational resources based on semantically analysing their similarity and relationship with other resources. The video shows the system applied to a BBC programme ("The Secret Life of Chaos").

    Welcome to LDBC

    In the last years we have seen an explosion of massive amounts of graph shaped data coming from a variery of applications that are related to social networks like facebook, twitter, blogs and other on-line media and telecommunication networks. Furthermore, the W3C linking open data initiative has boosted the publication and interlinkage of a large number of datasets on the semantic web resulting to the Linked Data Cloud. These datasets with billions of RDF triples such as Wikipedia, U.S. Census bureau, CIA World Factbook, DBPedia, and government sites have been created and published online. Moreover, numerous datasets and vocabularies from e-science are published nowadays as RDF graphs most notably in life and earth sciences, astronomy in order to facilitate community annota- tion and interlinkage of both scientific and scholarly data of interest.

    Technology and bandwidth now provide the opportunities for compiling, publishing and sharing massive Linked Data datasets. A significant number of commercial semantic repositories (RDF databases with reasoner and query-engine) which are the cornerstone of the Semantic Web exist.

    Neverthless at the present time,

    • there is no comprehensive suite of benchmarks that encourage the advancement of technology by providing both academia and industry with clear targets for performance and functionality and
    • no independent authority for developing benchmarks and verifying the results of those engines. The same holds for the emerging field of noSQL graph databases, which share with RDF a graph data model and pattern- and pathoriented query languages.

    The Linked Data Benchmark Council (LDBC) project aims to provide a solution to this problem by making insightful the critical properties of graph and RDF data management technology, and stimulating progress through compettion. This is timely and urgent since non-relational data management is emerging as a critical need for the new data economy based on large, distributed, heterogeneous, and complexly structured data sets. This new data management paradigm also provides an opportunity for research results to impact young innovative companies working on RDF and graph data management to start playing a significant role in this new data economy.

    "This paper introduces the notion of the education graph, a conceptual representation of the resources and interconnections at the heart of the learning process. We present our latest work on the Talis Aspire family of products that, through the use of Linked Data principles and technologies, enables the assembly and application of a rich education graph based on learning resources used in tens of UK universities.     La red mEducator utiliza la tecnología semántica y los datos enlazados para ofrecer un servicio que permite acceder, evolucionar y reutilizar recursos educativos médicos en entornos de Educación Superior en Europa:

    "The mEducator Best Practice Network (BPN) aims to implement and critically evaluate existing standards and reference models in the field of e-learning in order to enable specialized state-of-the-art medical educational content to be discovered, retrieved, shared and re-used across European higher academic institution".

    "With sharing and reusing, educational resources become increasingly important for enhancing learning and teaching  experiences, particularly in medical educational domain since these resources are expensive to re-produce. In respect to this, many  efforts have been applied to federate the resources to achieve the sharing and reusing goals, which led to a fragmented landscape of  competing metadata schemas, such as IEEE LOM or OAI-DC, and interface mechanisms, such as OAI-PMH or SQI. However, the  major issue of educational resource federating is the heterogeneity challenge of metadata and data. In this paper, we illustrate a  medical educational dataset (mEducator Linked Educational Resources dataset) that is published as part of the Linked Open Data  cloud following Linked Data principles. The dataset contains educational resource metadata federated from ten different (medical)  educational institutes together with enriched links to related information by using Linked Data techniques and datasets. We introduce a Semantic Web Service based data extracting mechanism that is exploited for services and data integration to address  heterogeneous metadata problems. The paper also discusses the dataset accessing APIs, statistics and existing applications of using  the mEducator dataset".

    This market study comprises an overview of available tools that can perform semantic extraction. In this way it continues and complements work from Europeana v1.0 and EuropeanaConnect. The requirement was to investigate effective and efficient tools for the  extraction of concepts and named entities from digital text, audio and video resources.
     
    What is semantic extraction?
    Semantic extraction refers to extracting the meaning of a document, preferably in a (semi-)automated way. Part of semantic extraction are the following processes: recognizing and extracting named entities and keywords, analyzing the sentiment of a document, extracting facts and relation between those facts and named entities, categorizing documents, recognizing and extracting concepts and finally adding them as metadata or annotations.

    Linked Data on the BBC

    Estrategia de la BBC vinculada a linked data. Ventajas principales de la adopción de este enfoque que permite pensar el conjunto de recursos de la BBC como elementos de un ecosistema donde los contextos y las vinculaciones automáticas generan nuevos usos y aplicaciones.

    Ventajas:

    • In terms of usability, it's about making a site around the things people care and think about.
    • In terms of User Experience, it's more that just linking. It's also about having meaningful predicates and granular, addressable resources, so that those resources can be transcluded or visualised in new ways. For example, we can graph how many times a brand plays an artist...
      Make things ajax by consuming machine feeds of a resource.
    • And making sure that each thing has it’s own resource makes these objects more findable,
      and more sharable.

    Following the Linked Data principles, the BBC is publishing a URI for every TV and Radio programme it broadcasts, music artists and more recently animal species and habitats. These pages not only provide useful information in their own right but also allow us to re-contextualise the programme information helping users to discover new content and new patterns. In this seminar we will present the motivation behind these projects and how their design and implementation has allowed us to expose their contents on the Web of Data.
