This site builds on a previous web site that used a toolkit based on a web ontology language called SHOE, developed at the University of Maryland. Former Maryland PhD student Jeff Heflin did his thesis on SHOE, and developed many tools and techniques for using semantic markup (In fact, Jeff continues his work on SHOE and related languages, which is described on his research page.) Work on SHOE, and some of the first web pages based thereon began in 1996, and various tools and web pages using SHOE have been found on University of Maryland web sites since then. This site is the most ambitious such to date, and is the first to use many of the new Semantic Web tools developed in the MINDSWAP project.
