The Semantic Web provides an enticing vision of our online future. This next-generation Web will enable intelligent computer assistants to work autonomously on our behalf: scheduling our appointments, doing our shopping, finding the information we need, and connecting us with like-minded individuals.

Unfortunately, the Semantic Web is also a vision that, to some, seems very distant, perhaps even outdated. It has been over a decade since it was popularized in a May 2001 article in Scientific American. Semantic Web researchers and engineers have been toiling even longer on the monumental technical and sociological challenges inherent in creating a global Semantic Web.

The good news is that we are seeing evidence today of its accelerating emergence. Although still far from its grand vision, there are available today small “local” versions of semantic webs and intelligent assistants. Consumers can begin using these intelligent assistants today; producers can begin incorporating this next-generation semantic data into their current business models and applications.

Paradoxically, the path to a global solution may evolve not only through the cooperation of a community, but through the selective forces of competition. As proprietary semantic networks and software agents vie for mass market dominance, winning technical and business models will emerge through a tapestry of data providers and services.

Semantic Web Technologies for Business Intelligence | IGI Global

This chapter describes the convergence of two of the most influential technologies in the last decade, namely business intelligence (BI) and the Semantic Web (SW). Business intelligence is used by almost any enterprise to derive important business-critical knowledge from both internal and (increasingly) external data.

"CaaS will enable every app to become as smart as Siri in its own niche. CaaS powered apps will be able to think and interact with consumers like intelligent virtual assistants — they will be cognitive apps. You will be able to converse with cognitive apps, ask them questions, give them commands — and they will be able to help you complete tasks and manage your work more efficiently."

Traditional relational databases and Artificial Intelligence Knowledge Bases have much in common in that both serve to store and retrieve information. However, the expressivity with which information can be represented and the flexibility with which it can be queried set true Knowledge Bases apart from more traditional data stores.

The paper describes a system for semantic relations extraction, based on the usage of semantic information provided by ResearchCyc and shallow syntactic features. The experiments have shown that the external knowledge, encoded as super-class information from ResearchCyc without any word sense disambiguation, significantly contributes to improve overall performance of the system. The problem of the lack of coverage may be overcome by the usage of other large-scale knowledge bases, such as DBpedia. For future work, we will try to use the Cyc inference engine to obtain implicit information about nominals in addition to the information about their

Web is 20 Years Old – Web 3.0 – Third Decade of Web, Officially Begins (Nova Spivack - Minding the Planet)

"The Web is 20 years old this month. The third decade of the Web has started. This means we are officially in Web 3.0 now. Web 2.0 is finished"

The Next Web to Be User-Centric (Thoughts on David Siegel's Pull Book) (Semantics Incorporated: The Feed)

"Tell me, how much time do you waste searching for stuff on the web, or filling up forms with similar information over and over? For all its might, utility, and growth, what we have today is a scattered web, a web of destinations, on which finding information requires a whole expedition across loosely-connected archipelagos of data, each with its own information requirements*, rules of engagement, and gravitational attempts at capturing your time and money. So, when David Siegel contacted me to review his upcoming book Pull: The Power of the Semantic Web to Transform Your Business, I was immediately attracted by his core premise, the creation of a web that would automatically wrap around us and serve us based on the actual characteristics and needs of our lives"
