Case Study: Use of Semantic Web Technologies on the BBC Web Sites

Publicación en la web de W3C del caso la utilización de tecnologías de web semántica en las páginas web de la BBC. Este caso se publicó en enero de 2010.

La presentación del caso concluye con los beneficios clave del uso de la tecnología de web semántica:

"Key Benefits of Using Semantic Web Technology

    • Usability—Making a site around the things people care and think about.
    • User Experience—Having meaningful predicates and granular, addressable resources, so that those resources can be visualised in new ways.
    • User Journeys—Allowing users to make their own journeys across our content. On the BBC /nature, users can start making their own documentaries. They can start on an animal, watch a programme clip, follow a link to a related habitat, read about that habitat and so on…
    • One page per thing—Making our resources part of the Web and therefore linkable and discoverable.
    • Our web site is our API—One URI for both machines and web browsers. Our web site can be used by third parties to create new products, e.g., URIPlayTestTubeTellyFanHubz orChannelography(*).
    • Loosely coupled development—Different teams can work together in a loosely coupled fashion. Each team focuses on their domain of interest."

Cambridge University Library delivers linked open data and enrichments

Case Study: Cambridge University Library delivers linked open data and enrichments

In the lead-up to the RLUK Linked Open Data (LOD) Hackathon on Wednesday 14th May in London, The European Library is running an awareness campaign to promote LOD innovations in libraries across Europe. This case study is one of a series that highlights achievements of pioneering libraries to date in this exciting area.

The Cambridge Open Metadata (COMET) Project was funded by the JISC Infrastructure for Resource Discovery Programme over a six-month period in 2011. COMET aimed to improve the visibility of Cambridge University Library's collections - which include Darwin's correspondence and Newton's manuscripts - by adopting a Linked Data approach. In partnership with OCLC, it also explored the value of linked data in catalogue enrichment.

LODStories: Learning About Art by Building Multimedia Stories

LODStories is an engaging application where people learn about art while constructing multimedia stories about art. LODStories mines the Linked Open Data cloud to discover interesting connections between artworks, artists, places and ideas. LODStories guides users to construct a storyboard that connects the entities in an interesting way. It then fetches text, images and videos that users can arrange to create a multimedia story, and finally constructs a narrated video that users can edit and then publish to tell their story. The process is fun, and students learn about art and its connection to the world they live in. The paper describes the architecture of the system and the algorithms to make the exploration entertaining and educational.
