La información en las redes sociales viaja a un ritmo "inesperadamente lento, con la excepción de algunos eventos masivos", según un estudio realizado por investigadores de la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) y publicado en la revista que analiza cómo influye el comportamiento de los internautas en la propagación de datos en la Red. Así, la difusión de información en las redes sociales, "algo de vital importancia en campañas de comunicación y marketing o diseminación de rumores y virus, por ejemplo", está fuertemente determinada por la "gran heterogeneidad que tienen los internautas en su tiempo de respuesta", tal y como explican los investigadores.
