Linked Data at the Guardian | Open Platform | The Guardian

The semantic web is given a rough raking by the syntactic web, and it is not impossible to see why when you first get taken down the SPARQL/RDF/Ontology rabbit hole. It is not great fun learning to develop with the semantic web today.

(As an aside, using a semi-SQL model as a primary metaphor in SPARQL did not help me personally. But then, SQL has always seemed like an assembly language designed by Prolog programmers)

The New York Times committment to Linked Data began over 160 years ago. Starting in 1851, The New York Times has always catalogued its archival articles using a controlled vocabulary of people, places, organizations and descriptors. In 2009 The New York Times started publishing this vocabulary as linked data using semantic web standards.

In 2011 The Times announced the launch of several RESTful Semantic APIs. And in late 2012 and early 2013, The Times will migrate its entire process for vocabulary management to a system designed around the principles of Linked Data. In my remarks, I will survey the history of Semantic publishing at The New York Times, outline our semantic strategy, detail the business-case for linked data at The Times and provide an in-depth explanation of our new vocabulary management system.

Linked Data tools: Semantic Web for the masses

Semantic Web technologies have immense potential to transform the Internet into a distributed reasoning machine that will not only execute extremely precise searches, but will also have the ability to analyze the data it finds to create new knowledge. This paper examines the state of Semantic Web (also known as Linked Data) tools and infrastructure to determine whether semantic technologies are sufficiently mature for non–expert use, and to identify some of the obstacles to global Linked Data implementation.

    European Open Data Portal

This portal is about transparency, open government and innovation. The European Commission Data Portal provides access to open public data from the European Commission. It also provides access to data of other Union institutions, bodies, offices and agencies at their request. The published data can be downloaded by everyone interested to facilitate reuse, linking and the creation of innovative services. Moreover, this Data Portal promotes and builds literacy around Europe’s data. The data publishers, application developers and the general public can also use new functionalities enabled by the semantic technologies.

LOD2 – Creating Knowledge out of Interlinked Data

This visualisation tool was made with the help of the Linked Open Data "LOD2" Project, co-funded by the European Commission within the FP7 Information and Communication Technologies Work Programme (Grant Agreement No. 257943). The project aims at building an integrated technology stack for publishing linked data. The visualisation and open data pages for the Digital Agenda scoreboard have been executed as part of the public activities of the LOD2 project by the LOD2 partners: Tenforce, AKSW research group at the University of Leipzig and OpenLink Software.

    LinkedUp has launched! (Linkedup-project.eu)

The LinkedUp project will advance the adoption of open Web data, in particular for educational purposes. In practice, that means that you can expect exciting developments in open linked data for education. Particularly:

    • The LinkedUp Challenge: which will identify, support and promote highly innovative applications and technologies which exploit open Web data
    • Curated datasets: LinkedUp will catalog and curate open Web data to make it accessible for data consumers, in particular in educational contexts.
    • Evaluation Framework: the LinkedUp evaluation framework (metrics, methods, benchmarks) can be reused and instantiated to evaluate Open Web Data applications in particular in the educational domain.
    • Web data success stories: applications and use cases identified during the LinkedUp Challenge will help data consumers the education sector to capitalise on open web data

    Linked Science. Interconnecting scientific assets

Linked Data for eScience Services (LIFE) is a two-year project funded by the German Research Foundation, jointly carried out by the Semantic Interoperability Lab (MUSIL) at Institute for Geoinformatics (http://ifgi.uni-muenster.de) and the University Library (http://ulb.uni-muenster.de) at University of Münster.

The overall goal of LIFE is to facilitate sharing of research data and thus improve interdisciplinary collaboration in science and education. The approach addresses all kinds of resources, ranging from articles and books through maps to raw data. The Linked Data approach will be used as a basis for the university library’s eScience services to seamlessly integrate their offerings into both the scientific and the global information infrastructure.

These eScience services will enable researchers and students to systematically navigate the dynamic and heterogeneous global network of research data, exploiting spatio-temporal information for discovery and creating views meeting their information needs. LIFE is a research activity in the Linked Open Data University of Münster (LODUM, http://lodum.de) initiative that fosters exchanging scientific and educational data as Linked Data.
