    El Knowledge Media Institute (KMi) es el responsable de la estrategia de datos abiertos de la Open University (OU). El KMi es un centro de investigación de la OU que trabaja con intensidad en el terreno de las tecnologías semánticas. Su cometido se centra fundamentalmente en los campos de la ingeniería ontológica, la representación del conocimiento, la interoperabilidad y el data linking. Entre sus trabajos más reseñables destaca el citado proyecto de Linked Open Data de la OU, la primera plataforma de datos enlazados en el mundo universitario, que cuenta con más de 20.000 documentos reutilizables, entre los que se incluyen papers, grabaciones de clases, cursos completos…

    En la actualidad, el KMi cuenta con 80 personas en distintos grupos de investigación ubicados en las siguientes líneas de trabajo: Future InternetKnowledge ManagementMultimedia & Information SystemsNarrative HypermediaNew Media SystemsSemantic Web & Knowledge Services y Social Software. En todos los casos, el KMi hace especial énfasis en el vínculo y las posibles aplicaciones de las tecnologías semánticas y la formación y educación. El trabajo de los investigadores se refleja en hasta 130 proyectos. El KMi tiene su propio ‘termómetro’ para valorar la relevancia (Hot, Active y Classics) de cada uno de los proyectos en función del momento de desarrollo de sus trabajos.     Decipher, a solution for digital heritage that works with semantic web technologies

    DECIPHER aims to support the discovery and exploration of cultural heritage through story and narrative. To do this the project is developing new solutions to the whole range of narrative construction, knowledge visualisation and display problems for museums.

    Digital heritage and semantic web technologies hold out the promise of nearly unlimited access to cultural knowledge. The problem is that cultural meaning does not reside in individual objects but in the patterns of knowledge and events, belief and thought that link them to each other and to the observer. This is why narrative is so important to the communication of, and meaningful understanding, of culture.

    DECIPHER is developing new solutions to the whole range of narrative construction, knowledge visualisation and display problems, with a high degree of future proofing.


    DECIPHER is a three year, €4.3 million Specific Targeted Research Project (STREP) supported by the European Commission.



    · Published semantic workflow models and formalised representations of the curatorial processes.

    · Published schema and software tools for describing cultural content in terms of their relationships to events, places, people and themes, and the user’s purpose and cognitive profile.

    · Search, retrieval and aggregation software tools that harvest cultural content from public sources across domains (art, music, dance etc.) in such a way that it can be semi-automatically described with the event schema.

    · Reasoning-based software tools that support the individual organisation and exploration of content across historical periods and cultural domains.

    · A software Demonstrator built of Open Source components that creates a robust and sustainable repository of narrative that is linked to the collections of digital cultural objects held by partner institutions and external networks. This will be designed for subsequent exploitation on a Software as a Service model.

    · Standard-based user interfaces that deliver a personalised, rich media experience that use any browser-based device capabilities for visualisation, including 3D and stereo image and sound.

    DiscOU (The Open University)

    DiscOU is a resources discovery engine relying on a semantic index of Open University Open Content. It semantically analyse the content of an online resource, and match it by similarity to other existing Open University content to retrieve the most relevant pieces.

    DiscOU is developed at the Knowledge Media Institute of the Open University, based on linked data techonologies.

    The resource includes a video with a demo of DiscOU system, that suggest content from Open University open educational resources based on semantically analysing their similarity and relationship with other resources. The video shows the system applied to a BBC programme ("The Secret Life of Chaos").


    Mathieu d´Aquin. Open University. Semantic Web

    Mathieu d'Aquin is a research fellow at the Knowledge Media institute (KMi) of the Open University in Milton Keynes, UK. His research activities focus on the Semantic Web, and especially on methods and tools to build intelligent applications relying on formalised knowledge distributed online. Mathieu has in particular been involved in the development of the Watson Semantic Web search engine, and in many applications of its APIs.

    Interesante informe publicado por Mathieu d’Aquin, experto en Web Semántica del Knowledge Media Institute (The Open University, UK) en junio de 2012 en el que analiza la utilización de los datos abiertos enlazados (Linked Data) en educación:

    "In this report, we introduce a recent development in the area of Web technologies which has the potential to revolutionise the area of ODL: The Semantic Web. While the Semantic Web has been, until now mostly considered from a research perspective, we focus here on the concrete benefit that can today be obtained from applying the set of principles and technologies that have emerged from the most pragmatic part of the Semantic Web field: Linked Data.

    In this report we describe how this idea is being realised and how it can be adopted by organisations willing to contribute, interlink to and take advantage of the Web of Linked Data for ODL. We describe the tools, technologies and processes to publish and use Linked Data in a concrete way, focusing in particular on learning and teaching applications. Understanding both the costs and benefits of adopting Linked Data and Semantic Web technologies is, of course, a critical part of the process. Alongside the description and explanation of the technological notions related to this area we show how such notions can be applied to solve some of the specific problems faced in ODL and present a number of case studies in which such benefits have been concretely achieved"
