XCRI Knowledge Base - eXchanging Course Related Information

    LinkedUp has launched! (Linkedup-project.eu)

The LinkedUp project will advance the adoption of open Web data, in particular for educational purposes. In practice, that means that you can expect exciting developments in open linked data for education. Particularly:

    • The LinkedUp Challenge: which will identify, support and promote highly innovative applications and technologies which exploit open Web data
    • Curated datasets: LinkedUp will catalog and curate open Web data to make it accessible for data consumers, in particular in educational contexts.
    • Evaluation Framework: the LinkedUp evaluation framework (metrics, methods, benchmarks) can be reused and instantiated to evaluate Open Web Data applications in particular in the educational domain.
    • Web data success stories: applications and use cases identified during the LinkedUp Challenge will help data consumers the education sector to capitalise on open web data

    LinkedEducation.org

"While sharing and reusing educational data across institutional and national boundaries is a general goal for both the public and the private education sector, the last decade has seen a large amount of research dedicated to Web-scale interoperability. The Linked Data approach – based W3C standards such as RDF and a set of successful principles – has evolved as the general standard for sharing data on the Web and led to vast amounts of publicly available data sets, and a multiplicity of Linked Data-consuming applications which provide added-value services. However, there is only limited take-up of Linked Data principles in the educational field"

"This paper introduces the notion of the education graph, a conceptual representation of the resources and interconnections at the heart of the learning process. We present our latest work on the Talis Aspire family of products that, through the use of Linked Data principles and technologies, enables the assembly and application of a rich education graph based on learning resources used in tens of UK universities. Techniques for entity extraction and reconciliation across data sources are presented, in addition to descriptions of recommendation generation from portions of this education graph".

Talis Aspire.

"Talis Education Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of Talis Group Ltd – a privately owned, established innovation company. We apply decades of expertise in our business divisions focused on our partner communities in education and linked data. Talis Education Ltd is our professional learning technology business"

    • Talis Aspire Campus Edition: "We develop  innovative resource management solutions and services for universities, learners and educators. The company has transformed the learning resource experience of thousands of students through the development of the world’s first linked data enterprise application"

Building a Linked Data Graph for Education

"Just as a social and professional graph have emerged through Facebook and LinkedIn, so too is an education graph emerging describing connections between students, teachers and the learning resources they use. The Talis Aspire application allows university lecturers to create lists of learning resources for a particular course, which are then expressed according to the Linked Data paradigm. With the application now in use at one quarter of UK universities, the resulting data provides a rich insight into patterns of resource usage across the education sector. This talk will detail the mechanisms used to unify the various institutional graphs, exploiting the flexibility of the RDF data model and the Linked Data principles, before describing how this unified education graph is being used to provide value back to customers, in the form of analytics and recommendations.

    Key points:

    • Talis Aspire is based on Semantic Web technologies and Linked Data principles.
    • It is widely deployed across the UK Higher Education sector and used daily by large numbers of staff and students.
    • The aggregate view of the resulting data provides unique, cross-sector insights.
    • The techniques used to assemble this graph mirror those used to interlink the Web of Data as a whole.
