    Summary

The GoodRelations ontology (http://purl.org/goodrelations/) is one huge success story of applying Semantic Web technology to business challenges. In this tutorial, we will (1) give a comprehensive overview and hands-on training on the conceptual structures of the GoodRelations ontology including patterns for ownership and demand, (2) present the full tool chain for producing and consuming GoodRelations-related data, (3) explain the long-term vision of linked open commerce, (4) describe the main challenges for future research in the field, and (5) discuss advanced topics, like access control, identity and authentication (e.g. with WebID); micropayment services (like Payswarm), and data management issues from the publisher and consumer perspective.

How to Characterize Quality for Data Products (Semantic Web)

Stephan Zednik has been working on the problem of accurately characterizing quality for science data products. He writes, “Science product quality is hard to define, characterize, and act upon. Product quality reflects a comparison against standard products of a similar kind, but it is also reflective of the fitness-for-use of the product for the end-user. Users weigh quality characteristics (e.g. accuracy, completeness, coverage, consistency, representativeness) based on their intended use for the data, and therefore quality of a product can be different based on different users’ needs and interests.  Despite the subjective nature of quality assertions, and their sensitivity to users fitness-for-use, most quality information is provided by the product producer and the subjective criteria used to determine quality is opaque, if available at all.” continued…New Career Opportunities Daily: The best jobs in media.

Web con los 10 productos de la web semántica del año 2009.

2009 has seen a lot of Semantic Web and structured data activity. Much of it has been driven by Linked Data, a W3C project which gained momentum this year. According to Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the Web, Linked Data is a sea change akin to the invention of the WWW itself. We've gone from a Web of documents to a Web of data. The 10 products we've picked out for this end-of-year review are ones that have done interesting things with data. Connecting to other data, building new applications with data, sharing data, and more. These 10 products may not be the type of Semantic Web apps that the W3C envisaged in the 90s, but that no longer seems to matter. What's important is that the Web is becoming more meaningful - more semantic.
