The term Linked Data refers to a set of best practices for publishing and connecting structured data on the Web. These best practices have been adopted by an increasing number of data providers over the last three years, leading to the creation of a global data space containing billions of assertions - the Web of Data.

In this article we present the concept and technical principles of Linked Data, and situate these within the broader context of related technological developments. We describe progress to date in publishing Linked Data on the Web, review applications that have been developed to exploit the Web of Data, and map out a research agenda for the Linked Data community as it moves forward.

Pundit, augment web pages with semantically structured annotations

Pundit is a novel semantic annotation and augmentation tool. It enables users to create structured data while annotating web pages.

Annotations span from simple comments to semantic links to web of data entities (as Freebase.com and Dbpedia.org), to fine granular cross-references and citations. Pundit can be configured to include custom controlled vocabularies. In other words, annotations can refer to precise entities and concepts as well as express precise relations among entities and contents.

Pundit is designed to enable groups of users to share their annotations and collaboratively create structured knowledge.

Pundit has been developed by Semedia at Universita' Politecnica delle Marche within the SemLib EU project.

"Google makes use of structured data in a number of ways including rich snippets which allow websites to highlight specific types of content in search results"

"To provide webmasters with greater visibility into the structured data that Google knows about for their website, we’re introducing today a new feature in Webmaster Tools - the Structured Data Dashboard. The Structured Data Dashboard has three views: site, item type and page-level"

New versions of documents on structured data in HTML5

Understanding the New Web Era: Web 3.0, Linked Data, Semantic Web

    1. Web 3.0
    2. Linked Data
    3. Semantic web

Richard MacManus concluye: "Web 3.0 is an amorphous term, and possibly one that people shouldn't even attempt to use. Nevertheless, it's clear to us that the time for structured data has come. We're beginning to see it in the current wave of Linked Data sets being released, and in the support that big companies, like Google and Yahoo, are showing for structured data. Who knows, maybe the Semantic Web is nearly upon us too."

Participants in the 2009 Semantic Technology Conference walked away considering fundamental questions about what is and isn't semantic technology. The relevance of this post's title will hopefully become clear by the end to those of you mischievous readers who may have stumbled upon it with other ideas
