How Google's Social Search Shift Will Impact Your Brand's SEO

In what could be hailed as the update that sparked an all-out Internet riot, Google has launched "Search, plus your World," which pours personal social results into your public search listings. The catch is that it only factors in your Google+ social graph, leaving Facebook and Twitter, arguably the more active social networks, out in the cold.

This could prove to be an even bigger search engine development than Google's infamous Panda update, which aimed to remove sites with low-quality content. Why? Because it’s easier to write good content (or at least, hire someone to write good content) than it is to get people to share your content.

Erin Everhart is the director of web and social media marketing at 352 Media Group, a digital marketing agency that also provides web and mobile app development. Connect with her on Twitter @erinever.

SEO, PPC and Semantics in 2014: What to Expect - Semanticweb.com

Katie McQuater of The Drum recently wrote, “As part of The Drum’s most recent Search supplement, a cross-section of experts from the search marketing industry give their predictions for the space in the year ahead.” McQuater starts with Caragh McKenna, Group Account Director of The Search Agency. McKenna states, “With the introduction of Hummingbird in September online marketers have been abuzz with conjecture on how it will affect site rankings and what it will mean as semantic search evolves to saturate organic search results. In reality semantic search has been merging into users search results over the past two years. Google has been tweaking it’s algorithm to increasingly use semantic and conversational cues to associate related results moving to more user friendly search results with less focus on the ‘primary keyword’.”

    Deconstructing Google’s Knowledge Graph - semanticweb.com

Barbara Starr of Search Engine Land recently observed that, “Search is changing – and it’s changing faster than ever. Increasingly, we are seeing organic elements in search results being displaced by displays coming from the Knowledge Graph. Yet the shift from search over documents (e.g. web pages) to search over data (e.g. Knowledge Graph) is still in its infancy. Remember Google’s mission statement:Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information to make it universally accessible and useful. The Knowledge Graph was built to help with that mission. It contains information about entities and their relationships to one another – meaning that Google is increasingly able to recognize a search query as a distinct entity rather than just a string of keywords. As we shift further away from keyword-based search and more towards entity-based search, internal data quality is becoming more imperative.”

Fouad Zablith, Miriam Fernandez and Matthew Rowe Knowledge Media Institute (KMi), The Open University Walton Hall, Milton Keynes, MK7 6AA, United Kingdom ff.zablith, m.fernandez, m.c.roweg@open.ac.uk

The aim of this paper is to introduce the current efforts toward the release and explotation of The Open University's (OU) Linked
Open Data (LOD). We introduce the work that has been done within the LUCERO project in order to select, extract and structure subsets of information contained within the OU data sources and migrate and expose this information as part of the LOD cloud. To show the potential of such exposure we also introduce three dierent prototypes that exploit this new educational resource: (1) the OU expert search system, a tool focused on nding the best experts for a certain topic within the OU sta; (2) the Buddy Study system, a tool that relies on Facebook information to identify common interest among friends and recommend potential
courses within the OU that `buddies' can study together, and; (3) Linked OpenLearn, an application that enables exploring linked courses, Podcasts and tags to OpenLearn units. Its aim is to enhance the browsing experience for students, by detecting relevant educational resources on they while reading an OpenLearn unit.
